Pramod Varma was chief architect of Aadhaar and of the India Stack layers built on top of it: eSign, DigiLocker, UPI, and the Data Empowerment and Protection Architecture. He is CTO of the EkStep Foundation and genesis author of the beckn protocol, and advises UIDAI, NPCI, and other public bodies.

## Where their work shows up

The engineering constraint here has no equivalent in commercial identity: authenticate a billion people on intermittent connectivity, on cheap devices, at a cost per transaction low enough for government to absorb. The architectural answers, thin layered public protocols with private-sector applications on top, and consent-based data sharing through DEPA, are now the reference model for digital public infrastructure in other countries.
