Game studios do not buy one identity platform. They buy one for players, one for staff, and a verification layer where the law or the business model demands it. This ranking picks the strongest tool for each of those jobs rather than forcing one vendor to cover all of them.

## How we ranked

Each pick is scored on our [10-dimension capability rubric](https://startwithidentity.com/methodology/), then weighed for gaming fit: login volume and latency at launch peaks, account-takeover defenses, SDK coverage for the platforms you ship on, cost at high monthly active user (MAU) counts, and whether the tool does a job the others cannot. The [gaming vertical guide](https://startwithidentity.com/verticals/gaming/) sets out the requirements, and [identity for gaming](https://startwithidentity.com/articles/identity-for-gaming/) covers social login and child safety in depth.

## Who each pick is for

[Auth0](https://startwithidentity.com/vendors/ciam/auth0/) is the player-login default when developer speed and protocol breadth matter: SDKs across major frameworks, passkeys, and Actions for custom login logic in code. Per-MAU pricing escalates with scale and enterprise features sit in higher tiers, so model a free-to-play launch before signing.

[Amazon Cognito](https://startwithidentity.com/vendors/ciam/amazon-cognito/) suits backends already on AWS. User pools map cleanly to IAM roles, API Gateway and Lambda, and pricing is usage-based with a free tier. Expect more work on hosted UI and flow customization than with a dedicated CIAM.

[Okta](https://startwithidentity.com/vendors/iam/okta/) secures the studio, not the players: SSO, adaptive MFA and lifecycle automation for developers, live-ops staff and contractors. It is SaaS only.

[CyberArk](https://startwithidentity.com/vendors/pam/cyberark/) protects privileged access to build systems, game servers and cloud consoles. Palo Alto Networks completed its acquisition on 11 February 2026 and relaunched the portfolio as Idira in May 2026, so product names and contracts now run through Palo Alto. It is heavy for a small studio.

[Veriff](https://startwithidentity.com/vendors/identity-verification/veriff/) adds document and biometric checks with liveness for age and identity verification. It sits beside your CIAM, priced per verification on quote.

## Quick picker by scenario

- **Studio launching on web and mobile:** Auth0, or Cognito if the backend is AWS.
- **Free-to-play title expecting millions of MAU:** price Cognito and Auth0 at peak volume before committing.
- **Real-money or age-gated features:** add Veriff at the point of risk.
- **Worried about a build-pipeline breach:** Okta for staff plus CyberArk (Idira) on privileged accounts.

## Trade-offs to plan for

Keep player and staff identity in separate tenants. Auth0 and Cognito offer free tiers; Okta publishes list prices for core SKUs but quotes real deals; CyberArk and Veriff pricing is unpublished.
