Retail identity is two programs that share a budget. One serves shoppers at peak-season scale; the other controls a high-churn workforce and the payment systems that sit in PCI DSS scope. This ranking picks the strongest tool for each job rather than one platform for everything.

## How we ranked

Each pick is scored on our [10-dimension capability rubric](https://startwithidentity.com/methodology/), then weighed for retail fit: login volume and cost at holiday peaks, consent and profile data for loyalty, joiner-mover-leaver speed for seasonal staff, and audit evidence for cardholder-data systems. The [retail and e-commerce vertical guide](https://startwithidentity.com/verticals/retail-ecommerce/) and [identity for retail and e-commerce](https://startwithidentity.com/articles/identity-for-retail-ecommerce/) cover requirements; [top 5 CIAM platforms for e-commerce](https://startwithidentity.com/articles/top-5-ciam-platforms-ecommerce/) goes deeper on the shopper side.

## Who each pick is for

[Auth0](https://startwithidentity.com/vendors/ciam/auth0/) is the developer-first choice for a storefront you build yourself: broad SDKs, social login, passkeys, and Actions for custom login logic. It has a free tier, then per-MAU tiers that climb steeply, so model your peak month.

[Okta](https://startwithidentity.com/vendors/iam/okta/) runs workforce identity for stores, warehouses and head office. Lifecycle automation from HR sources is mature, which matters when seasonal staff join and leave in waves. It is SaaS only and priced per module.

[SAP Customer Data Cloud](https://startwithidentity.com/vendors/ciam/sap-customer-data-cloud/), built on Gigya (acquired 2017), is the large-brand option where consent and customer profiles feed SAP marketing and CRM. It is SaaS only, quote-based, and makes most sense for existing SAP customers.

[CyberArk](https://startwithidentity.com/vendors/pam/cyberark/) vaults and records privileged access to point-of-sale, payment and back-office systems. It is now part of Palo Alto Networks and branded Idira. Scope it to cardholder-data systems first.

[SailPoint](https://startwithidentity.com/vendors/iga/sailpoint/) certifies who has access across store, supply chain and corporate applications. It is not an identity provider and takes months to implement well.

## Quick picker by scenario

- **Mid-size retailer with a custom storefront:** Auth0.
- **Large B2C brand on SAP commerce and CRM:** SAP Customer Data Cloud.
- **Thousands of seasonal hires a year:** Okta, driven from your HR system.
- **PCI DSS assessment coming up:** CyberArk (Idira) on cardholder-data admins, plus SailPoint certifications. See [identity controls for PCI DSS](https://startwithidentity.com/guides/compliance/identity-controls-for-pci-dss/).

## Trade-offs to plan for

Keep shopper and staff identity in separate tenants. Every pick except Auth0's entry tier is quote-based or priced by module, so compare on total cost, not list price; [CIAM pricing models explained](https://startwithidentity.com/articles/ciam-pricing-models-explained/) shows where per-MAU bills spike.
