This is a side-by-side scorecard rather than a shopping list. Five [zero trust](https://startwithidentity.com/guides/fundamentals/what-is-zero-trust/) platforms scored against one rubric.

## Where this category splits

The architectural choice comes before the vendor choice.

**Proxy-based security service edge** (Zscaler, Netskope, Palo Alto Prisma Access) routes traffic through the vendor global edge, inspects it, and applies policy centrally. That gives full inspection, data loss prevention and a single enforcement point, at the cost of putting a vendor in the path of everything and paying for the bandwidth.

**Overlay and mesh networks** (Tailscale, and much of Cloudflare access tier) build an identity-aware network between endpoints instead, so traffic goes direct. Far simpler to run, far better liked by engineers, and deliberately not doing full traffic inspection.

If your requirement is inspecting and controlling what leaves the organisation, the first class is the only answer. If it is replacing a VPN with something engineers will not route around, the second usually wins.

## What has changed in the market

Network and identity vendors are converging. Palo Alto Networks completed its acquisition of CyberArk in February 2026 and relaunched the portfolio as Idira, putting privileged identity and network enforcement under one roof. Expect bundling pressure at renewal.

## How to read these scores

Every vendor here is scored on the same [10-dimension rubric](https://startwithidentity.com/methodology/). Scores are comparative within the category, not absolute: a 4.5 means strong relative to peers solving the same problem.

Three things the scores deliberately do not capture. They do not price your deployment, because most vendors in this category quote rather than publish. They do not measure fit with your existing stack, which is usually what actually decides it. And they do not predict vendor stability, which in identity has mattered more than features lately given the pace of consolidation.

Use this to narrow a field to two or three candidates on capability, then pilot against your worst case rather than the vendor's reference architecture.
