## Overview

Descope, founded in 2022 by former Imperva and Demisto leaders, is a developer-focused [CIAM](https://startwithidentity.com/guides/fundamentals/what-is-ciam/) platform whose signature is a visual flow editor. Teams compose authentication and onboarding flows by dragging steps together, then change them without shipping new code, which makes auth something product and growth teams can iterate on, not just engineers.

## What it is good at

The no-code flow builder is genuinely differentiated: passwordless, [passkeys](https://startwithidentity.com/guides/authentication/passkeys-101/), MFA, step-up, and risk checks can be reordered and A/B-tuned visually. Passkey-first support is excellent, B2B features (organizations, SSO, SCIM) are present, and the developer experience around SDKs and embedding is strong. For products where login conversion and friction are business metrics, the ability to change flows quickly is valuable.

## Where it falls short

It is SaaS only, so on-prem and self-hosted requirements are out. Data residency, however, is available: Descope [documents regional storage](https://docs.descope.com/management/project-settings/multi-regional) in the United States, the European Union, Australia, and Canada on Growth and Enterprise plans, and it reached FedRAMP High authorization in July 2025. As a younger company it has a shorter enterprise track record and smaller ecosystem than [Auth0](https://startwithidentity.com/vendors/ciam/auth0/), and deep governance and audit are light, as expected for a developer CIAM. The flow-orchestration model is powerful but is a paradigm to learn.

Usage-based with a free tier, billed by monthly active users, tenants, SSO connections, and machine-to-machine exchanges.
