🇲🇽 Mexico
Mexico's identity rests on the universal CURP population key, now being upgraded to a biometric CURP set as the official national ID by a 2025 reform, alongside the INE voter credential that serves as the de facto national identity card.
CURP is Mexico's universal 18-character population registry key assigned to every resident. A 2025 reform created the biometric CURP, adding a photo, fingerprints, an electronic signature, and a QR code, and establishing it as the official national identity document. Public enrollment opened in January 2026.
See how it works →The Credencial para Votar is the photo ID card issued by the INE to enable voting, but it functions as Mexico's most widely accepted official identity document for civil, banking, commercial, and administrative purposes. It is often treated as the de facto national identity card, and the current model includes a QR code verifiable through the official Valida INE QR app.
