Overview
Microsoft Entra External ID is Microsoft's CIAM product for external identities: customers, partners, and other users outside the organization. It is the successor to and consolidation of Azure AD B2C and the external-collaboration (B2B) capabilities, and it is distinct from Microsoft Entra ID, which is the workforce identity platform, and from Active Directory, which is the on-premises directory. For organizations already standardized on Microsoft, External ID keeps customer identity within the same cloud, security tooling, and compliance boundary as the rest of their estate.
What it is good at
Ecosystem fit and reach are the core strengths. External ID supports OpenID Connect, SAML 2.0, social identity providers, and passwordless methods including passkeys (WebAuthn/FIDO2) and Microsoft Authenticator, and it plugs into Conditional Access, Identity Protection risk signals, and Microsoft's compliance certifications. Custom user flows let teams brand and shape sign-up and sign-in, and running on Azure means the same monitoring, governance, and data-residency options as the rest of a Microsoft deployment. Backed by Microsoft's support ecosystem, it is a safe institutional choice for Microsoft-aligned enterprises.
Where it falls short
Developer experience is the historical weak point. The Azure AD B2C lineage was known for complex custom policies and a steep learning curve, and while External ID modernizes the model, it is still more involved than the drop-in experience of developer-first CIAM tools. The value is strongest inside the Microsoft ecosystem; teams on non-Microsoft stacks get less benefit and more friction. Authorization and lifecycle features are lighter than dedicated tools, and pricing, while published and MAU-based, sits within Azure's broader billing model.
Pricing
Monthly-active-user pricing with a free tier, billed through Azure. Costs scale with active customer identities and the features used (for example, premium add-ons). Model expected MAUs and compare against per-MAU CIAM competitors, since cost curves diverge as a customer base grows.
Best for, and who should look elsewhere
Choose Entra External ID when you are a Microsoft-aligned enterprise extending identity to customers or partners and want that identity inside the same Azure security and compliance model. Look elsewhere if your stack is not Microsoft-centric or you want the fastest developer experience: compare Auth0 for a broad vendor-neutral platform, Amazon Cognito for AWS-native scale, and the best CIAM platforms ranking for the wider field.
Bottom line
Microsoft's customer identity product, strongest for enterprises already on Microsoft who want CIAM within their existing cloud and compliance boundary. Capable and well-supported, with a developer experience that trails the CIAM specialists. See it in context in our enterprise CIAM for passwordless and passkeys and enterprise CIAM for scale and security comparisons.
Microsoft Entra External ID: frequently asked questions
- What is Microsoft Entra External ID?
- Microsoft Entra External ID is Microsoft's customer identity and access management (CIAM) product for external users, customers and partners. It is the successor to Azure AD B2C and the external-collaboration capabilities, and it supports passwordless and passkey authentication, social and enterprise federation, and custom sign-up and sign-in flows on the Microsoft cloud.
- Is Microsoft Entra External ID the same as Active Directory?
- No. Active Directory is Microsoft's on-premises workforce directory, and Microsoft Entra ID is the cloud workforce identity platform.
