Comcast Xfinity customer data theft via Citrix Bleed

Between October 16 and October 19, 2023, before Comcast had finished mitigating, attackers exploited Citrix Bleed (CVE-2023-4966) in its NetScaler systems; Citrix had announced the flaw and a patch on October 10 and issued further mitigation guidance on October 23. On November 16 Comcast determined data was likely taken: usernames and hashed passwords, and for some customers names, contact details, last four digits of Social Security numbers, dates of birth and secret questions. Xfinity disclosed on December 18, 2023 and forced password resets.

The identity lesson

Citrix Bleed exposed session tokens, so the fix was patch plus terminating all existing sessions. Gaps of days between disclosure and patching, without session revocation, were enough for theft at scale.
