MITRE NERVE network breached via Ivanti zero-days and session hijacking

MITRE disclosed on April 19, 2024 that a foreign nation-state actor breached NERVE, its unclassified research and prototyping network, starting in January 2024. The attacker exploited two Ivanti Connect Secure zero-days, CVE-2023-46805 and CVE-2024-21887, hijacked VPN sessions to get past MFA and move laterally into MITRE's VMware infrastructure, and used compromised accounts including an administrator account. MITRE did not name the actor.

The identity lesson

MFA at the VPN does not survive a hijacked session or an auth bypass in the gateway itself. Session binding, rapid patching of remote access appliances and re-authentication before admin actions inside the network would have narrowed the path.
