Roku account credential stuffing in two waves

Roku disclosed on March 8, 2024 that 15,363 accounts had been accessed with credentials stolen from other sites, and on April 12 that about 576,000 more were hit in a second wave found while investigating the first. Attackers used some accounts to buy streaming subscriptions and hardware with stored payment methods. Roku reset passwords and turned on two-factor authentication for all accounts.

The identity lesson

Roku's own fix, mandatory 2FA for every account, is the control that would have prevented both waves.
