🇫🇷 France
France pairs a chip-based national identity card (CNIe, in credit-card format since 2021) with the France Identite app, run by France Titres, and the FranceConnect federation run by DINUM, which lets residents sign in to public and private services with an existing trusted account.
France Identite is the state's digital identity app for holders of the credit-card-format national identity card (CNIe). It reads the card's chip over NFC to create a secured digital identity, which can be used to sign in through FranceConnect, generate single-use identity attestations and show a digital driving licence. It ran as a beta from May 2022 and opened to all CNIe holders on 14 February 2024.
See how it works →FranceConnect is the French state's identity federation. Instead of creating a new account, users sign in to public and private services with an account they already hold at a trusted identity provider such as impots.gouv.fr, ameli.fr, La Poste's Identite Numerique or France Identite. FranceConnect+ is the higher-assurance tier required for procedures such as financial transactions and access to medical records.
