Jeremy Grant established and led NSTIC at NIST, the first new cybersecurity programme of the Obama administration, and built what became NIST's Trusted Identities Group. The American identity problem is structural: there is no national identity system, so the private sector verifies people against credentials issued by states and federal agencies that were never designed to be checked digitally.
