Pramod Varma was chief architect of Aadhaar and of the India Stack layers built on top of it: eSign, DigiLocker, UPI, and the Data Empowerment and Protection Architecture. He is CTO of the EkStep Foundation and genesis author of the beckn protocol, and advises UIDAI, NPCI, and other public bodies.

The engineering constraint here has no equivalent in commercial identity: authenticate a billion people on intermittent connectivity, on cheap devices, at a cost per transaction low enough for government to absorb.
