Overview

Onfido, founded in 2012 in London and acquired by Entrust in 2024, is a leader in document-based identity verification. It pairs broad global ID document coverage with biometric face matching and AML screening, and is widely deployed across European and global KYC use cases. The Entrust ownership ties it into a larger identity and security portfolio. See all identity verification vendors for alternatives.

What it is good at

Document and biometric verification is the core competency, with strong global ID coverage and mature liveness detection. The Atlas AI models and Studio orchestration give teams configurable, no-code verification flows, and the developer experience and SDKs are among the better ones in the category. Compliance depth and AML integration suit regulated onboarding.

Where it falls short

Onfido is document-and-biometric first, so buyers whose risk leans toward fraud signals, device intelligence, or phone-based trust will need to supplement it. As an enterprise-oriented vendor, pricing and onboarding favor larger volumes over small self-serve projects. The Entrust acquisition adds portfolio reach but also the integration uncertainty that follows consolidation.

Pricing

Quote-based, typically per-verification with volume tiers negotiated for larger contracts. There is no public self-serve price; model your real volume with the TCO calculator.

Best for, and who should look elsewhere

Choose Onfido when document verification plus biometrics for KYC is the priority, especially for European or global deployments. If you need fraud-signal-heavy coverage consider Sardine; for a broad KYC, KYB, and AML platform consider Sumsub; for a close global document peer consider Veriff.

Bottom line

A leading document-and-biometric verification provider for regulated KYC, now part of Entrust. Best when documents and faces are the core check.
